Adopt

Adopt a dog in Bali. Every dog listed here was found on the street, then treated, vaccinated and sterilised before being listed. What you see is what you get: no surprises and FREE.

I am not a shelter. I take one or two dogs at a time, treat them at home alongside my own pack, and find them permanent homes. That is the limit of what I can do properly, so that is what I do.

What is included

Every dog leaves already sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed and treated.

How adoption works

To adopt a dog in Bali, the process is simple:

  1. Send a message telling me about your home and who lives there.
  2. Photos of where the dog will live, including the fence or gate.
  3. We meet, and you meet the dog.
  4. Adoption is FREE, but a donation is always welcome. It goes directly into treating and sterilising the next dog.
  5. Follow up. This is not a single check. I will stay in contact and ask for updates from time to time, by video call or by visit, for as long as feels necessary.

What I ask

This is a forever home, not a temporary one. When you adopt, this dog becomes your family for the whole of her life, through moving house, through babies, through job changes, through every inconvenient season. That is the commitment being made here, and it is not a small one. They never go to the street, never get passed to a stranger, and never get left behind.

The dog stays indoors or in a secured yard. No chaining. No breeding. You remain contactable and allow follow up by video call or visit when I ask.

Sterilisation is the work that stops the next generation being born on the road. Follow the treatment and sterilisation updates at AbyssPaws.

Common questions

Can I adopt a dog in Bali if I am not Indonesian?

Yes. Many adopters here are foreign residents. If you plan to leave Bali eventually, the dog goes with you. Flying a dog out is possible with planning, and I will tell you honestly what it involves.

Are these dogs healthy?

Every dog is treated for the conditions they arrive with, including mange, worms, ticks and infections, and they’re dewormed, given rabies vaccination and sterilised before being listed. Funding is limited, so I do not promise a full panel of vaccines or diagnostics. What I do promise is that they are stable, cared for and honestly described, and that you receive the complete record of everything done for them.

Are Bali street dogs good with children?

Most are. Temperament is assessed during the weeks the dog lives with me and my own pack, and I tell you what I have actually seen rather than what you want to hear.

What if it does not work out?

There is no trial period here. You are taking on this dog for their whole life, and the decision needs to be made before you take them, not after.

I cannot adopt. Can I still help?

Yes. Sterilisation is the work that prevents the next generation being born on the street. Every contribution goes directly to surgery and medication.

How long does the process take?

It depends on the dog and on you. Some are ready in days.

Do you deliver the dog?

Within reason, yes. I am based in Tabanan and can arrange transport for reasonable distances. For anywhere further, we discuss it. I will not hand a dog to a courier or send them off with a stranger.

Can I meet the dog before deciding?

Yes, and I prefer it. Photos and video only tell you so much. Meeting in person tells both of us whether this is right, and it tells me how you behave around an animal that does not yet trust you.

I already have dogs. Is that a problem?

No, it usually helps. I will tell you honestly whether the dog I have is comfortable around others, because I will have watched them live with sixteen of mine. Introductions still need to be done slowly, and I will talk you through it.

Why do you only take one or two dogs at a time?

Because that is what I can fund and treat properly. I would rather place a small number of dogs in good condition than take in more than I can care for and do a poor job for all of them. When one dog is placed, the next one comes in.

What does the adoption cost?

Nothing. Adoption is free, and it will stay free, because I would rather a good home was not blocked by money. If you are able to donate, the money goes straight into treating and sterilising the next dog, and I will show you exactly what it paid for.

Can I see what happens to the money?

Yes. Every vet bill is documented, and the treatment and sterilisation work is published as it happens. If something goes wrong or a dog does not survive, that gets published too.
